South Bay to North Bay
This is a classic Scarborough walk for both locals and visitors. The route takes you from the bustling South Bay, past the historic harbour, to the quieter North Bay, and offers a mix of urban and coastal beauty.
Start your walk at South Bay, and enjoy its sandy beach, pier and impressive Victorian architecture. Follow the promenade, pass the town centre, and head north along the cliffside to North Bay. On this walk you’ll pass the Scarborough Spa, the Grand Hotel and the magnificent Scarborough Castle, which sits atop a headland overlooking the sea. Three great pieces of architecture, well known as local landmarks. If you’re feeling adventurous continue your walk around the headland, following the Cleveland Way.
Filey Bay Walk
For those looking to venture a little further out from Scarborough, a trip to Filey offers another unforgettable coastal walk. Just a short drive south of Scarborough, the town of Filey is famous for sweeping sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs.
Begin your walk at Filey Brigg, a rugged promontory that juts into the North Sea. From the panoramic views of the coastline at Brigg, head south along the beach all the way to the Filey Gap. This area is well known for its birdwatching opportunities, and you’ll spot a variety of seabirds as well as local wildlife. You can extend your walk by heading into the nearby Filey Country Park.
Dalby Forest
If you’re in the mood for a woodland adventure, Dalby Forest provides an outstanding location. Approximately 8 miles from Scarborough, Dalby Forest is a vast expanse of mixed woodland, and has several trails that cater to all levels of walkers. There are numerous well-maintained paths, including both short strolls and longer, more challenging routes. For a spring walk, try the Bluebell Trail, which runs through ancient woodlands and is especially beautiful in the spring when bluebells carpet the ground. If you’re looking for a more demanding hike, try the Red Route, which explores higher ground and offers amazing panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
North York Moors
The North York Moors National Park is an absolute treasure trove of beautiful walks, offering everything from gentle strolls to more challenging hikes. Sited north of Scarborough, this incredible location features rolling hills, valleys and landscapes that are just perfect for outdoor exploration.
A great starting point is from the village of Hutton-le-Hole, a charming spot nestled in the heart of the moors. You can explore various paths that wind through heathland, farmland and ancient woodland dotted with streams and waterfalls. For a truly rewarding experience amongst this stunning natural beauty, head towards Rosedale. Here you’ll encounter dramatic moorland views and the remains of old mining communities. You may even spot wild deer and foxes.
Scarborough to Robin Hood’s Bay
If the combination of shoreline scenery and serious hiking is for you, then the walk from Scarborough to Robin Hood’s Bay is a must. This popular route is part of the Cleveland Way National Trail, a long-distance path that takes you along the spectacular Yorkshire coastline.
The full walk from Scarborough to Robin Hood’s Bay is around 10 miles, so it’s quite challenging and you should think seriously about tackling it. You’ll pass through cliff-top paths, steep ascents and a mix of coastal and rural landscapes. Along the way, you’ll be treated to amazing views out over the North Sea, and you might even spot seals or dolphins in the waters below. You’ll end up in the charming old fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay where winding streets and cobbled alleys greet you.
Hackness and Wykeham
For a more rural experience, the walk from Hackness to Wykeham is an idyllic route through the heart of the countryside. Located just a short distance from Scarborough, it’s well known for its peaceful charm and scenic beauty.
Start in Hackness, a small village set in a valley, and from here follow a circular route through farmland, woodlands and along the banks of the River Derwent. As you make your way towards Wykeham, you’ll pass through traditional Yorkshire countryside, where the landscape is dotted with dry stone walls and the occasional farmstead. This walk is often quieter than some of the more popular routes, so it’s ideal if you prefer strolling in solitude and peace.
Scarborough and the surrounding areas offer a wealth of opportunities for those keen to experience natural beauty.
